The dangers of inaction in addressing the challenges of traditional energy production, management and use are clear. Renewable Energy Sources offer the world a clean and sustainable energy future. Policy - specifically poor policy - represents one of the major remaining barriers to such a future. Cities especially have an important role to play - and often lack clear policy guidelines.

Urban Sustainability

I offer consultancy services in the area of sustainable energy policy concepts, with a special focus on the urban environment. Cities offer enormous systemic, social and economic challenges to sustainability, while at the same time representing the coal face of the global struggle for a sustainable world.

The Developing World

Many years of experience in the application of renewable energy technologies to development issues, and an extensive network of contacts world-wide, allows me to offer support in the realisation of renewable energy projects and initiatives in the developing world.

Policy

Having been active in national and multinational renewable energy policy activities for many years, I am able to consult on renewable energy policy development and implementation to national and regional governments and related stakeholders.

About Rian van Staden:

With more than 10 years experience in the renewable energy field, Rian has contributed to numerous projects and initiatives on renewable energy policy. He has served as the Executive Director of the International Solar Energy Society, the Secretary General of the European Solar Cities Initiative, member of the Board of the International Solar Cities Initiative, and on the advisory committees of numerous conferences. He served on the Steering Committee of the Renewables 2004 multilateral conference in Bonn, and has participated in the multilateral policy process surrounding energy for many years. His special area of interest is sustainability in the urban environment. His academic background is in Human Geography and Computer Science.
